Shocknawe

Shocknawe should not even be here!

Met Shocknawe.  He should not be here!

His mom went into labor in the middle of the afternoon which is very unusual.  Most mares prefer the middle of the night.  It is safer then.

At any rate she was pushing too long.  After a mare’s water breaks you have about 15 minutes, then you call the vet.  Our regular vet was out of town so I called another and it took some time for him to get there.  She was examined.  Dr. tried to reach in and gravy the baby.  Often if they are in the wrong position the foal can be turned.  Nothing was working.  We had been working so long at this point I figured we were working on saving the mare.  I had given up on the foal.

We loaded her into the trailer and took her into the vets.  There were a lot more things we could try at the clinic.  The Doc and his assistant tried more manipulation but had no better results.  Finally they decided to hang her upside down by her heels.  This widens the pelvis.

They were able to get the foal out.  Would you believe it?  He was alive!  It had been a couple of hours since her water broke.  Needless to say that is how he got his name.

The reason he had trouble being born was that he is a dwarf.  Needless to say he and his father were both gelded.

Come and visit us again because Shocknawe has more stories to tell.

Learning how to lead.
